Summeris typically the only real quiet time in the aquarium design and installationgame. Construction projects generally are under way, so if the addition of acustom aquarium isn't already in the plan, we won't see as many newinstallations. Mix in the fact that folks are taking vacations and busy gettingthe kids back in school spells a less hectic time. That being the case, thiswas a good opportunity to focus on infrastructure and internal growth for BluePlanet.

Namely, our facility underwent some radical changes. Newflooring and entire new paint job through our 2000 square foot offices, fishholding and work space along with new work stations, computers, servers andfurniture was an overdue upgrade.

Our fish holding system has been upgraded to low voltage andenviro-friendly LED lighting. The use of LED lighting on aquariums, we feel, isone of the greatest innovations in our industry in the past 10 years. As well as using less power to run, there areno bulbs to replace and they simply look incredible as well.

Also, two years ago we changed our name from Aquariclean toBlue Planet Aquarium Services. Thissummer we changed our Blue Planet logo from the globe we have been using tosomething that better displays what we do. The Cornflower Anemone and AngelFish logo in a cube 'aquarium' over the name and tag line 'Cutting EdgeAquariums & Service' is something we poured over for days and are veryhappy with the results of. We them gave some tips on how to make a freshwateraquarium anything but typical. The article should be out in the next fewmonths.

Along with all these projects there were of course some aquariuminstallations. We'll get to two in particular soon but one small one we werethrilled to be a part of was a rehab and restart of a 160 gallon reef aquariumin a science classroom at Providence St. Mel's Grade School in Chicago. Alllabor and materials were donated by Blue Planet, as we were proud to offer ourservices in an effort to have students learn about marine life in theclassroom. If not for the classroom, many of these kids would never have theopportunity to be exposed to sea life at all.

There were two aquarium installations this summer that didstand out in particular however. First off, we were approached by a mixed usedormitory in downtown Chicago to install what first started to be a 50 gallonfreshwater aquarium. After a few meetings, freshwater became saltwater and 50became 100, 100 became 200 and 200 (you can probably guess where I'm going withthis) became 300. The entire concept of the aquarium was to provide a barrierin the entrance to keep kids from going around security (those crazy collegekids) and gaining access to the dorm rooms. We worked with a millworker todesign cabinetry the blended seamlessly with the wood tones and stains alreadyin use in the building, so the aquarium installation didn't look like anafterthought. Now the aquarium houses numerous fish and is very popular withstudents and staff alike. We'll be shooting some video of this aquarium anddeveloping a separate piece regarding the development and installation of thisaquarium on our YouTube channel shortly, stay tuned for that!

The other large installation we are just putting the wrapson this week is a residence in Hinsdale, IL. No 'man cave' is complete withoutan aquarium and this one was no exception. In particular, this basement rehabwhen finished will house full arcade video games, pool table, flat screen TV's(everywhere), a home theater, 2 bars and a industrial smoke eater for cigars inthe wine cellar. Just like your basement, right? The 'piece de resistance' ofthis remodeling project is the 6 foot x 4 foot x 4 foot room divider style reefaquarium. Over 400 gallons of capacity, this aquarium has all the bells andwhistles from 24 hour LED lighting that recreate sunrise, day time, sunset andmidnight, to wave generating pumps, water cooled and energy efficient chiller, pumps, refugium and etc. Stay tuned for a follow up video on the design andinstallation of this beauty as well on our YouTube channel.

We'd also like to announce that this past September markedour 12 year anniversary. Sure.....I love sushi!"

An interior designer I am not. However, one of the parts of my job I love most is the "design" aspect of planning a new aquarium installation. My favorite challenge is when I walk into a new client's home or office that is planning to add an aquarium and they say "OK Jon, where does it go?" Helping them decided everything from the size, shape, dimensions and placement in the room, right down to choosing whether to go freshwater, saltwater or with a saltwater reef aquarium, is an exciting process with incredible finished products.

Now if I were an actual and formally trained interior designer, I would probably know about different methodologies, styles and schools of thought for choosing what goes where in a room and why.

One school of thought in design that I've often heard about, but knew nothing about was Feng Shui, so I decided to do a little research. What I've learned is Feng Shui is much more than design style; it is a 3000 year old Chinese belief, art and science that helps gain good fortune, health and wealth by balancing energies in a room or space.
So why is my monthly aquarium article talking about Feng Shui you ask? Well, if I told you an aquarium could attract abundance and wealth, protect your family or help further your career, would you be interested? As it turns out, the aquarium can be a virtual Feng Shui blow torch. The aquarium utilizes all 5 Feng Shui elements in perfect harmony. Those elements; water (such as the water in the tank), fire (represented by the colors in the fish), metal (as seen in the construction and equipment of the aquarium), wood (also in the construction, cabinetry and décor) and earth (gravel or substrate) are represented in the aquarium and create the balance needed for what is known as "Good Feng Shui".

The aquarium's placement in the room is vitally important in achieving the desired result you're after. Placing the aquarium in the south east corner is said to help achieve wealth and abundance. If the aquarium is located on the north wall it may aid in furthering one's career and the east wall is believed to promote good health and family.

Unfortunately in Feng Shui style, there's a good and bad side to planning your aquarium placement. Just as the ideas above will promote all sorts of benefits, the wrong placement can work against you. Placing an aquarium in the bedroom is considered "Bad Feng Shui". Water, the obvious primary component of the aquarium, is thought to bring energy. The bedroom is believed to be a place of cocooning and healing. Calming, nourishing and sensuality (hello!) need to be stressed and the water element works against that.

Secondly, the kitchen is thought to be a place of warmth and the soul of the home. The primary element present is thought to be fire, opposite of water. Also, similarly to the bedroom the kitchen is a place for nourishment and what is thought to be the "nervous energy" given off by water works against that.

So there. I've just helped your family, got you promoted and made you millions, all by talking about where your aquarium should go. Glad I could be of service to you.

Thanks for reading and keep and eye out for next month's article "Small is the New Big" to get some ideas of how you can easily and very affordably add a beautiful and easy to care for aquarium in your home or office.

Thanks for reading and if you have any questions or comments feel free to contact me directly at Jon@BluePlanet-AS.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://aquariuminstallation3-27.blogspot.com/2011/03/feng-shui-surei-love-sushi.html' title='"Feng Shui? In the 1800s, Japanese fisherman returning from sea were often unable to afford to show off their prized catch for fear of the fish spoiling before returning home. As a result, they would spread ink on the bodies of the fish and press thin, malleable rice paper over them, thus creating a picture of its actual length and size. Today, many pieces of gyotaku artwork are considered to be valuable family heirlooms and hang in countless Japanese museums.

A recent collaboration between my brother and I found some of our work in The Irving Art Center, Irving TX. We've installed and worked on plenty of fountains, water "walls", ponds and what we frequently install are baptismal fonts. In the past, a font was a still body of water, which after being stagnant, having people dipping their fingers and hands in or actually submerging someone for baptism, the water began to get pretty foul. The water would be cold, possibly contaminated with pathogens or disease, and have odor, cloudiness and collect dust and dirt from the church.

Recently, baptismal fonts have a much more elaborate composition. We have added filtration systems which keep the water at body temperature, filter out dust and other debris which may fall into the font. There is also an ultraviolet sterilizer which irradiates any free floating pathogens such as viruses and bacterias from person to person, via the water in the font. We also add a reverse osmosis filter to distill tap water going into the font. Over time, hard water stains can develop on the marble of the font and by only having the purest water possible, these stains are greatly lessened.

Waterloo, IN. We installed this recently in the waiting area of a maintenance client who has been with us for over five years. The cabinetry has a custom stain which blends well with the furniture. The aquarium itself is a 180 gallon with a "bowed" front which gives it a dimension over the typical rectangle aquarium. It is a reef aquarium featuring some fish, live rock, corals and other invertebrates. What's really nice about this aquarium is that it has gone into their new facility and replaces..............

Yes, 1984 called and they want their aquarium back! This was a white acrylic stand and canopy. The old pumps were noisy and used energy like it was going out of style, as did the light fixtures. All and all a very nice upgrade indeed.

Awww, that's nice.

Madison Wisconsin Aquarium Rehab

I took a call recently from a woman who was standing in front of one of our aquariums in a Nordstrom Department Store. When I answered the phone she abruptly said "You have to help me!"

I immediately thought, "Call 911, poison control, SWAT.....", then she started telling my how beautiful this aquarium was and the one she had at home was a complete disaster.
This is an emergency more up my alley to deal with. As it turns out, she and her husband had a rather large aquarium in their home and it was installed by someone the home builder recommended but they quickly started questioning his know how and craftsmanship. They had replaced him with several different service companies and the aquarium had begun slipping from bad to much, much worse, to complete disaster.

I told her we would be happy to come out, review the tank with her and make a plan to getting things back on track. Being she was in Madison Wisconsin and us in Chicago, we decided to give her some immediate relief; we would send a crew out to perform a maintenance service as well as a consultation on improving the aquarium.

When our crew arrived they found the aquarium was literally the focal point of the house viewable from two levels and four different rooms. The aquarium had built in "insert" coral which was not removable, which was covered in algae. The water had a brown tint and smelled horribly. The plumbing which ran through the house into the basement where the filter was kept was all drippy, leaking and hazardous vinyl tubing.

The only animals left in the aquarium was a couple snails and a starfish. The tank was completely under filtered for its size and upgrades were going to be essential. The coral, which at one time was gorgeous and colorful, was now stained with algae and colorless and had also been cut into several pieces and glued back in place. Visible white epoxy lines ran horizontally and vertically through the piece which looked out of place, to say the least. Our work was cut out for us to literally gut the tank and start over again as well aremovingthealgae and repairing the coral.

The filtration and re-plumbing was simple. We added a chiller to control temperature, cartridge filter and protein skimmer to collect debris and an ultraviolet sterilizer to kill free floating pathogens from the water. A reverse osmosis filter was added to remove the numerous metals and minerals in the Wisconsin well water for use on the aquarium. Also, we changed to a 24 hour lighting system to recreat sunrise, mid day sunlight, sunset, twilight and midnight.

The coral was going to be more of a challenge. The first challenge was removing all the stained algae. We used a product called Algae Eraser from Harbor Labs which almost immediately killed layers of the algae and showed some color back on the coral. After the Algae Eraser circulated for a couple days, it virtually destroyed all remaining algae in the tank. We affixed individual decorative corals to the coral head and covered the lines from where the coral had been cut into pieces by the previous service company.

The finished project was unbelievable. Personally I felt it looked even better than the original aquarium our new client saw which caused her to call us. We now come out to Madison on a quarterly basis to perform service on their aquarium and send our client monthly maintenance items and fish whenever they chooses to add more.

From new installations to rehabs, another Blue Planet success story.

-Jon Wolf

Decorating the salt water aquarium

In aquarium design, what goes inside the tank (besides fish) is just as important as determining length, width, height and shape of an aquarium.

Our clients with a salt water fish aquarium have several options of decorating, largely using coral pieces which make the aquarium look like a reef, the fishes natural habitat. Years ago, those corals came only direct from the ocean. They were very fragile, expensive and largely only came in red, white and blue. Very patriotic, but not great for variety. These corals are still available but the trend has moved to synthetic corals made of fiberglass or plastic molds. These corals are extremely durable, easy to clean and come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes as well. For some larger aquariums, we may go to custom made "insert" pieces which are built right into the tank or removable for annual service and cleaning.

In the last pictures, you'll see we recently repaired insert pieces damaged by a new clients previous service company. This was the style she wanted to put in her new salon she was opening on the north side of Chicago, problem was; space. The aquarium as seen on the left that she was hoping to similarly have installed was built into a storage closet, facing a reception area. The tank was 6 feet long, 2 feet deep and 2 feet tall for a total of 180 gallons. The salon had no extra square footage to dedicate nor a storage room. What we came up with was a "wall aquarium" or picture frame aquarium.

The picture frame aquarium has very little capacity and only holds 40 gallons of water although is quite large at 60" x 8" x 24" tall. As you can see on the pictures on the right, the aquarium still is a focal point of the room. This particular model we are very pleased with, as it has built in sophisticated chemical, biological and mechanical filtration. Being so compact, there unfortunately is no place for a protein skimmer so we set the aquarium up as freshwater instead of salt water.

Thanks as always for reading my blog. Each is a fine product which has pros and cons such as the glass aquarium when in smaller sizes is generally much more affordable than acrylic. Acrylic aquariums are actually stronger than glass as the material is chemically bonded together instead of being held together with silicone like glass. One factor to keep in mind about acrylic aquariums is that since it is a softer material than glass it is more prone to scratching. The good news is those scratches can be repaired. Here is a recent repair we just performed for a client.

Ok, Ok, let's not get into how the scratch happened. Let's all just be assured that fixing scratches in acrylic aquariums is a piece of cake, inside or out. This particular scratch was quite deep and rather than using one of many hand held scratch removal kits available, we brought out the heavy artilery.

First a fine grit, wet or dry sand paper is used to "buff out" the scratch. What is actually happening is the acrylic is sanded down to below the scratch, thus removing it.

Secondly a high speed orbital sander is used with various buffing compounds to begining repairing the damage done by the sander. This will leave a "haze" still on the glass but very smooth to the touch.

Next a low speed polisher is used to clean up the material.

Lastly a soft cloth and light, liquid polish is used and the tank is as good as new!

If the scratch were inside the same method would be used however the water obviously would be removed. This can be done
quickly by using high speed submersible pumps and large holding
tanks to keep the water, fish and decor in.

Thanks as always for reading my blog. In salt water aquariums there are several animals that let's say, don't "get along" with each other in the same tank. What is referred to as a reef aquarium features live rock, live corals, polyps and invertebrates such as shrimps, crabs and snails. Many large fish may pass by these things countless times in the ocean without a problem, may pick on them or eat them outright on first site. For that reason we at AquariClean Inc like to keep most larger fish in a "fish only" aquarium featuring artificial corals and a reef aquarium with only few fish specimens such as clown fish, small gobies or wrasses but a variety of live corals and invertebrates.

Our client wanted both types of aquariums but space was an issue as the aquariums were going to be placed in his home office. Working with mill workers on site we were able to design a cabinet which matched the furniture in his office and housed a 120 gallon reef aquarium beneath the 200 gallon salt water fish aquarium.

When the client asked for something "different" in the aquarium, something unusual that most people don't have, the answer was simple: octopus! The trick with keeping an octopus is that they are vicious predators and cannot be kept with other fish or invertebrates at all. Dedicating an entire 200 or 120 gallon aquarium to an animal which generally would prefer to hide most of the time didn't seem like a good idea. Having a partition built in the reef aquarium, dedicating a quarter of the 120 gallon tank so the octopus wouldn't be able to get at the other animals however seemed like a great idea. We also put captive bread, tank raised seahorses in the reef aquarium as well. The finished project is an amazing array of animals in clean, healthy aquariums in beautiful custom cabinetry built to match the homeowners furniture.

Thanks again for reading my blog. Frequently AquariClean Inc is trusted to perform installations when aquarium manufacturers across the country sell jobs locally. But when a manufacturer from Seattle called the same day as a manufacturer from New York who were both asking us take care of some really neat installations at a pair of local Nordstrom department stores, I couldn't believe it. Each store was receiving the same aquariums. The aquarium from Seattle, a "half round" acrylic 200 gallon salt water fish tank with custom coral inserts was to be installed in the children's shoe department. The other aquarium from New York, a glass 240 gallon rectangle saltwater fish tank featured white decorative corals as well as white gravel to keep a theme as it was installed behind the (also all white) Lamer makeup counter. The installations were performed within a week of each other and went off seamlessly. Each aquarium features wet dry filtration, ultraviolet sterilizers, micron mechanical filters and protein skimmers as well as being temperature controlled.

The aquariums are serviced on a weekly basis as the store remains open for nearly 12 hours a day which means the aquarium lights must remain on that long as well, which is quite conducive to growing algae. The aquarium service also is performed early in the morning before the store opens which means some long days for the service techs at Blue Planet, but they're up to the task.

-Jon Wolf
